Why a Mitsubishi Starion?
I have always loved the look of the Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R and Chrysler Conquest TSI. The boxed flares and stock 16 inch wheels coupled with the sharp lines. I bought some brochures about five years ago to see what the options were for the 1987 year. I would see one or two out on the roads in the summer. Both were white, one that was owned by an employee at Patty's Auto Salvage in Saugus and the other was seen on the 93 Expressway on a Friday night heading to the North Shore. It looked mint. I would not see another one for 3 years.
As for them being on the market, they were few and far between. I was looking for a stock and unmodified example. I was always up to my neck with Volkswagen projects so I never did a full court press on acquiring one until 2021. I browsed some popular auction sites and saw the prices literally multiply by 3 to 4 from the prices three or four years ago.
I did not care if it was the Mitsubishi or Chrysler version and was not too particular on which color. I did want the black leather interior instead of a red, black or tan cloth. I did not want a sunroof and was leaning toward the 1988 and 1989 model years because of a bump in HP and Torque as well as the better looking front seats and four spoke steering wheel.
Beggars can't be choosers. After missing out on a few auction bids I kept browsing the marketplace. A $4K ad for a decade long garaging for a 1987 Mitsubishi Starion came up on a Monday. I was certain to be the first to inquire on the hour old ad but someone beat me to it and the ad was changed to "pending" while I waited with silence from the seller. By Friday, I got a response which led to a conversation.
Here was the story. The rather chipper young lady said that the car was her ex-husbands car and it has been in the garage for years and she wanted the garage spot back. I was told that it did run but needed work. A fender bender was mentioned.
More to come.......
